Anwar returning to Umno HQ after 25 years for coalition govt meet

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is set to return to the Umno headquarters at Menara Dato Onn in Kuala Lumpur tonight - his first time in 25 years since the "Reformasi movement" in 1998.

The PKR president will be attending the coalition government's first secretariat meeting at 8.30pm.

Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, who chairs the secretariat, confirmed the premier's attendance.

Also expected to be present at the meeting are Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, senior leaders from BN and Pakatan Harapan, as well as leaders from GRS, GPS, and Warisan.

The formation of the secretariat - which will be based at Menara Dato Onn - was announced by Zahid during the Umno general assembly last month.

Among others, the secretariat aims to guarantee the continuity of the government, mandated to lead the country after the 15th general election.

Anwar was sacked from Umno on Sept 3, 1998, and he has not set foot on Menara Dato Onn since then.

It is unclear who else from Harapan will be attending the meeting.

If DAP leaders are present, it would also be the first time any member from the party has set foot at the Umno headquarters, their once bitter rivals prior to GE15.

Malaysiakini was made to understand that Harapan will be holding a separate meeting this evening prior to the coalition government secretariat meeting.

Meanwhile, Utusan Malaysia reported that among the agenda that would be discussed during tonight's secretariat meeting include ways to realize the election manifestoes or promises of the different parties that make up the government.

"What matters is not the prime minister setting foot (in Umno headquarters) after more than 25 years, but seeing how 148 MPs from the government come together to charter the way forward for the next five years.

"Elected parliamentarians from various parties will discuss ways to strengthen the government, as this is the first time since the 11th general election that a government has obtained more than two-thirds majority," the daily quoted Zahid telling a press conference after attending a Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda) event in Kuala Lumpur today.
