IGP urges public to call 997 to report scams

Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani urged the public to call 997 to report any fraudulent activities they encounter while making financial transactions online.

The hotline is manned by the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) which was established last October under the previous government.

“The problem is that not everyone knows about it but it’s very important.

“To both the public and the media, I urge that you spread the word about the hotline and the call centre which could help many victims of scams,” he said.

Acryl (above) was speaking to reporters during the Excellent Service Award Ceremony at the Bukit Aman police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

The NSRC is a joint effort by the National Financial Crime Centre (NFCC), CyberSecurity Malaysia, the police, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), banking institutions, and telecommunications companies.

It is meant to receive reports from victims of online fraud.

In Budget 2023, it was announced that the call centre would be receiving RM10 million.

Acryl also spoke of a recent raid conducted by the MACC and Immigration Department’s Special Tactical Team on an international scamming syndicate.

The syndicate was suspected to have bribed certain authorities to protect its members and facilitate its operations in the country.

When asked why the police were not involved in the raid, Acryl said there was no need as the Immigration Department already had a specialised team.

He added that the police will take strict action against any of their personnel who engage in unlawful actions.

Along with this, he added that the police will soon be using body cameras to strengthen their integrity.

Aid for Johor

Meanwhile, the police chief said they have deployed 369 personnel to Johor to assist in flood operations.

“These people were part of the original flood task force that we sent out to flood-prone areas before.

“They will help in rescuing as well as fixing damages post-flood,” he said.

Acryl said water levels have risen at both the Chaah police station and the Segamat police headquarters.

He added that 126 people from the Segamat police headquarters were moved to temporary flood relief centres.

The authorities are closely monitoring other police stations that may also be at risk of flooding, he said.
