Govt: Dr M has right to use Presint 8 building in Putrajaya

Dr Mahathir Mohamad has the right to occupy the Perdana Leadership Foundation building in Presint 8, Putrajaya, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah, Sarawak Affairs and Special Functions) Armizan Mohd Ali said the office space used by Mahathir’s secretariat was part of the latter’s entitlements under the Members Of Parliament (Remuneration) Act 1980.

Armizan said part of the Perdana Leadership Foundation building was rented by the Prime Minister’s Department for Mahathir.

The minister said this in a written reply to Ismail Abd Muttalib (PN-Maran) who asked the prime minister what was the Perdana Leadership Foundation’s status, noting that the “seventh prime minister” was “there”.

Ismail also asked the prime minister to reveal how much was allocated by the government for the foundation.

Armizan said the foundation was a company registered with the Companies Commission with a stated goal of “Research, document, disseminate, and publicise the intellectual legacies of our past prime minister and to develop, manage, and operate a resource centre and library to achieve the objectives of the Foundation.”

He said the government does not allocate any money for the foundation.

The foundation was chartered in January 2003 as a non-profit when Mahathir was prime minister. The building he occupied was launched in 2005 by then prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Mahathir continued to use the building even when he was prime minister between 2018 and 2020.
