Being politically active not on my mind right now: Dr M

Following his departure from the Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) coalition, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said participation in active politics is not on his mind right now.

In a statement today, the former Langkawi MP said his focus is to garner the Malay community’s support for his ‘Malay People's Proclamation’ signature campaign.

He opined that the Malays from other political parties would not be comfortable supporting the movement if he was still part of a political party.

“The proclamation aims to unite Malays beyond political parties.

“This means that the Malays - who are also members of Umno, PKR and Amanah, as well as those in DAP - will sign the proclamation if they share the same awareness. 

“When the Malays can unite and agree with the awareness raised by the proclamation, then it becomes the responsibility of every party that is based on the Malays’ struggles,” he said. 

Mahathir said he had not sidelined any existing Malay political parties.

However, he asserted that the Malay masses would “lose everything” if there was no awareness and unity among the parties and groups fighting for the interests of the Malays.

In February, Mahathir withdrew from Pejuang - a party he formed in 2020, after being booted from Bersatu, another party he founded in 2016.

Last night, he told reporters that he quit GTA, the coalition he helped form last year.

Mahathir said the decision was made after GTA failed to show results during the last general election.
