No water tariff hikes in Klang Valley for now, caretaker MB assures

Selangor caretaker menteri besar Amirudin Shari has dismissed the possibility of the water tariff in the Klang Valley going up soon.

"Water tariff is a policy issue that needs the decision and approval from the state government.

"To date, the state government has not made any decision to hike up the water tariff for Selangor," Amirudin (above) said in a statement today.

He was responding to the call by Klang Valley water service operator Air Selangor earlier today, for the government to review water tariffs as soon as possible.

Its acting chief executive officer Abas Abdullah told reporters that it is necessary for the water tariff to be increased in stages to ensure there is an equilibrium between its annual revenue and expenditures.

Abas said Air Selangor recorded RM2.45 billion in total revenue last year versus over RM5.14 billion in its operational and capital expenditures.

Elaborating, Amirudin said the focus of his caretaker government in Selangor now is to ensure the continuity of the state economy, and not to burden the rakyat.

"The Selangor state government is committed to further strengthening the system which supplies water to 8.4 million people in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya."

Air Selangor charges domestic customers a rate of 57 sen per cubic meter for the first 20m³; RM1.03 for the next 15m³, and RM2 for usage above 35m³.
