PM leads funeral prayers for Salahuddin

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today led the funeral prayers for the late domestic trade and cost of living minister Salahuddin Ayub at Masjid Jamek Dato' Haji Noh Gadot in Serkat in Pontian.

Anwar, who arrived at about 11am, was accompanied by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu and Foreign Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir.

Also present were Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi and Johor state secretary Azmi Rohani.

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil and Defence Minister Mohamad Hasan were among the other cabinet members who attended the prayers.

Several political leaders including DAP chairperson Lim Guan Eng, Amanah vice-president Dzulkefly Ahmad, senator Mujahid Yusof Rawa and Johor PAS commissioner Abdullah Husin were also there to pay their last respects.

Salahuddin will be buried at the Jalan Sulong cemetery in Serkat.

Salahuddin, 61, died at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah in Alor Setar at 9.23pm yesterday, after undergoing surgery for a brain haemorrhage the day before.

The Amanah deputy president leaves behind his wife Fatimah Taha and six children - four sons and two daughters.

Meanwhile, Anwar has described Salahuddin as a leader who had been consistent in fighting for the people’s well-being, especially on cost of living issues.

He said Salahuddin was very dedicated in carrying out his duties as domestic trade and cost of living minister and was determined to ease the people’s burden through the Rahmah concept introduced by the government.

He added that Salahuddin’s death was deeply felt not only by friends but also by the people as he was synonymous with the Rahmah initiative.

“This is proof of his consistency in seeking ways to ease the people’s burden, including at meetings with me and other cabinet members.

“The country has lost a notable figure, and I hope his spirit, dedication and attributes like compassionate nature will serve as an example,” he added.

Salahuddin’s mortal remains were laid to rest at the Jalan Sulong Muslim cemetery in Serkat, at around noon today.

Funeral prayers were performed five times by different groups of people at the Masjid Jamek Dato' Haji Noh Gadot, including the ones led by his eldest son Iskandar Zulkarnain, 37, and Anwar.

Thousands of people comprising politicians, friends and relatives, as well as the general public, attended the funeral of the minister who had been so dedicated to helping alleviate the burden of the people, especially the cost of living.

Others present to pay their last respects were Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli, Education Fadhlina Sidek and Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Fuziah Salleh.
