Johor by-elections: Pulai turnout still below 50pct as of 5pm

Turnout for the Pulai by-election was still below 50 percent as of 5pm today.

According to the Election Commission, turnout was at 42 percent as of 4pm.

Information provided to the media by government channels later placed the turnout at 45 percent as of 5pm.

This is likely to be the final turnout update the EC provides - before announcing the final turnout tonight.

In Simpang Jeram, turnout at 5pm is believed to have reached 59 percent.

Earlier, EC chairperson Abdul Ghani Salleh said that the number of voters who fulfilled their responsibilities in today’s by-elections was relatively low due to unfavourable weather conditions.

Both the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections involve three-cornered fights involving Pakatan Harapan, Perikatan Nasional, and independent candidates.

In Pulai, Harapan candidate Suhaizan Kaiat is facing Zulkifli Jaafar of PN and independent candidate Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi.

In Simpang Jeram, Harapan’s Nazri Abdul Rahman is taking on surgeon Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya of PN and independent candidate S Jeganathan.

The two seats fell vacant following the death of Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub on July 23.
