Don't 'burn the bridge' with Muda, PKR MP tells Harapan

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim has urged Pakatan Harapan to not "burn the bridge" with Muda.

This, according to the PKR leader, is because the ruling coalition still needs the youth party's support to push through reforms that require a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

"Today, the Madani government only has 147 MPs in the Dewan Rakyat. A two-thirds majority requires the support of at least 148 MPs.

“This is why Muda is important, even though the party only has one parliamentary seat (Muar) won by its president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman,” Hassan (above) said in a statement on Facebook today.

Hassan noted that despite Muda quitting the government bloc in Parliament, the party did not join the opposition coalition (Perikatan Nasional), which has 74 MPs.

“As evident last Tuesday, when PN MPs staged a walkout from the Dewan Rakyat while Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was delivering his winding-up speech on the 12th Malaysia Plan mid-term review, Syed Saddiq did not follow suit and even stayed back until the debate was over,” he pointed out.

Hassan further recalled Syed Saddiq's pledge that he would remain supportive of the government's agenda when it comes to voting in the Dewan Rakyat on constitutional and institutional reforms.

The support, he said, will come in handy as the government looks to enforce two crucial reforms, namely the separation of powers between the attorney-general and public prosecutor, and reviving the Parliament Services Act.

"The prime minister should pay heed to Muda's positive stance of wanting to play the role of a constructive opposition.

"Muda is not a 'destructive' party that opposes for the sake of opposing. That is why Harapan should not burn its bridge with Muda,” Hassan added.
