T'ganu rep: Act against Muslim tourists wearing revealing clothes

A Terengganu PAS assemblyperson has urged the state government to take strict action against Muslim tourists who wear revealing clothes when visiting the state.

According to Ladang representative Zuraida Md Noor, tourism guidelines released by the Terengganu state government clearly stipulate that Muslim tourists have to cover their aurat.

"I have personally seen Muslim women wearing shorts, singlets, not wearing the tudung, and wearing other revealing clothes at tourist spots and islands," Utusan Malaysia quoted Zuraida (above), who is also the head of Ameerah unit for young women in PAS under 40, as saying during the debate at the state legislative assembly today.

According to Terengganu's tourism and recreational laws, Muslim tourists must cover their aurat when visiting the state, while non-Muslims must wear items of clothing that are not too tight, transparent, or short.

In addition, tourists should also not get involved in public displays of affection.

Similar rules are imposed on tourism industry frontline workers, such as hotel employees, tour guides, and boat operators.

Elaborating, Zuraida, who is the sole female assemblyperson in Terengganu, said the authorities must conduct continued monitoring on the matter at tourist attractions, hotels, resorts, as well as islands and beaches.

"Maybe many people do not know about the state government rules, or they do know but can be least bothered to follow them," she said, further blaming the lack of enforcement for the rule violation.
