The film ‘Tiger Stripes’ has officially been chosen to represent Malaysia in the 96th Academy Awards (Oscars) in the Best International Feature Film category.

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the film was decided upon by the Finas film selection committee in accordance with the regulations set by the Oscars’ organisers.

‘Tiger Stripes’ first made a name for itself when it won director Amanda Nell Eu the €10,000 (about RM49,684) Grand Prize award at this year’s Cannes Critics Week, making her the first Malaysian and Southeast Asian director to win the prize.

It also received a Special Jury Mention in the Debut Feature Film category at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Canada this year.

“May this development be an injection of enthusiasm to all film activists to continue to support the government’s mission in an effort to empower the country’s film industry at a global level.

“At the same time, I hope this effort will increase the branding potential and the internationalisation of the high-quality film and creative talents in this country,” Fahmi said in a statement today.

‘Tiger Stripes’ centres on 12-year-old Zaffan (played by Zafreen Zairizal) as she struggles to understand her body experiencing puberty.

Provoked by her community, she soon discovers that embracing her true self is the only answer to her freedom.

The film is a co-production among eight countries, namely, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, France, Germany, Netherlands, Indonesia and Qatar.

The movie is also getting a local release in Malaysia and will be screened at selected Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) cinemas. The screening will start on Oct 19.
