Some have called him intelligent and others, crafty. He is also said to be very ambitious and in certain circles, he is referred to as the de facto prime minister.

Now, malaysiakini has discovered another side to Khairy Jamaluddin.

The 31-year-old Oxford graduate and Umno Youth deputy chief, who is popularly known as KJ, has a penchant for speed as well.

The son-in-law of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has chalked up a total of 17 traffic summonses and six of them are for speeding.

According to rilek.com.my , a government-owned information web portal, the summonses have yet to be settled.

The summonses, since March last year, work up to RM5,100 and following a hefty discount, Khairy would have to pay RM1,740.

The Umno Youth deputy chief's other offences are for traffic obstructions, the latest being on April 21 this year.

Promises to pay

Judging from the list, Khairy often uses a vehicle with the registration plate "KJ10Q". It is believed to be a black SUV, which has been spotted during recent by-elections.

Two other vehicles in the list also have unique registration plates namely "WNA 13" and "WMT 8001".

In a SMS (short messaging service) to malaysiakini , Khairy said he would settle the summonses today.

"Thank you for alerting me I will reconfirm with PDRM (the police) and settle them (the summonses) today," read the message.

In a series of exclusive reports last year, malaysiakini revealed that a large number of cabinet ministers, including the prime minister, had outstanding traffic summonses.

Abdullah and several other ministers settled their arrears soon after the reports were published.
