Bersatu supreme council rejects Muhyiddin’s ‘no contest’ decision

The Bersatu supreme council has rejected its president Muhyiddin Yassin’s decision not to defend his presidency at the party election next year.

“The meeting has unanimously decided to reject Muhyiddin’s proposal not to defend his post in the party election.

“The supreme council is of the unanimous view that Muhyiddin’s leadership is needed by the party and the country,” said Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin today.

The decision was made at an emergency supreme council meeting chaired by Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu this evening.

Earlier at the end of his presidential address, Muhyiddin announced his intention to not defend the president's post.

The Pagoh MP also reiterated his position at a joint press conference with Hamzah, Faizal and other Bersatu leaders.

At the press conference, Hamzah said the Bersatu supreme council has accepted Muhyiddin's proposal.

“I don’t want this to be a big issue, and I would like to tell you, (that) all of us in the supreme council have agreed that Tan Sri (Muhyiddin) said he did not want to defend his position (next year).

"That doesn’t mean he wishes to (immediately) resign," Hamzah said earlier today.
