Detainee in Langkawi jail died of pneumonia

The post-mortem report of a woman who died in police custody at the Langkawi district police headquarters in Kuah, Kedah on Dec 16, revealed that there were no traces of criminal injuries.

Bukit Aman Integrity and Compliance Department (Jips) director Azri Ahmad said doctors confirmed that the cause of death of the 34-year-old detainee was due to pneumonia and was classified as sudden death.

“However, the Criminal Investigation Unit on Deaths in Custody (USJKT) under Jips Bukit Aman will continue the investigation from various angles before submitting the results of the investigation to the coroner,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The detainee had been remanded since last Tuesday at the Kuah police station lock-up, Langkawi district police headquarters (IPD) to assist with investigations under Section 39B and Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

She then complained about feeling unwell on the night of Dec 15 and was taken to the Sultanah Maliha Hospital in Langkawi and warded for treatment while under detention.

However, she reportedly died at 7.30am the following morning and the body was taken to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar, Kedah for an autopsy.
