Cops nab workshop owner who warned Akmal would get shot in KK Mart row

Police have arrested a vehicle workshop owner who allegedly made a death threat against Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh.

Melaka Tengah district police chief Christopher Patit said the 68-year-old was nabbed in Kandang on Tuesday after a police report was lodged against him.

Patit said the report was lodged by a 62-year-old pensioner who had heard the suspect vent about Akmal (above) while at the workshop last Wednesday.

“The pensioner alleged that the suspect told him the Umno Youth chief was going overboard on the KK Mart issue, and would surely be shot dead one day,” the district police chief was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

He added that during initial questioning, the suspect admitted he was dissatisfied with the Umno Youth chief’s remarks on the KK Mart issue.

The 68-year-old, who had health problems, was released on police bail.

The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, which is punishable with up to seven years in jail, a fine, or both.

It is unclear if this case is related to the death threat Akmal claimed to have been informed of yesterday.

Persistent boycott calls

The Umno Youth chief has been a vocal advocate for KK Mart to be punished and boycotted after socks bearing the word Allah were found in three of its outlets in Selangor, despite the chain and its supplier apologising.

Yesterday, an arson attempt was made at a KK Mart outlet in Bidor, Perak.

Akmal had condemned the attack, saying boycotts should be calm.

The row over the socks had previously led to two individuals, who made derogatory comments in response to the backlash from Muslims, being doxxed and physically confronted which then led to an apology.

Both have since been sentenced to six months in jail, and fined RM12,000 and RM15,000 respectively.

However, no action has been taken as of yet against those who doxxed and confronted them.

KK Mart and the supplier who sent the socks to the convenience stores have also been charged with deliberately hurting religious feelings.
