Muar MP wants govt's list of vehicles qualified for diesel subsidies

Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman asked the government for a list of vehicles qualified for the recently implemented targeted diesel subsidies.

In a press conference in Parliament today, he said the government’s mixed messages had caused uncertainty for the people.

He cited two separate speeches from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim where he first said the Toyota Hilux is a rich person’s car and therefore exempt from diesel subsidies.

However, in another speech, Syed Saddiq cited Anwar as saying that those who drive a Hilux can still qualify for subsidies.

“So, there is no certainty,” he said.

Syed Saddiq was referring to the removal of diesel subsidies at the pump across Peninsular Malaysia which came into effect at midnight on June 10 as part of austerity measures to handle the nation’s debt.

Following this, the price of diesel would be floated according to the market rate and updated weekly like RON97.

Not enough time to register

To curb the impact, the government introduced the Budi Madani Subsidy Aid Programme for private diesel vehicle owners and fleet cards for the public transport and logistics transport sectors.

Syed Saddiq criticised this measure, saying that the public was not given enough time to register for the aid.

“It was less than a month before the application was opened, but the government already floated the price of diesel and then aid was given.

“Just like with previous policies, the people need to adapt a few months in advance before they are fully implemented,” he said.
