Teoh Beng Hock activists enraged after cops cancel questioning

Activists from the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) have expressed their disappointment after Brickfields police cancelled an appointment to record their statements today.

TBH-ADA chairperson Ng Yap Hwa, along with members Wong Yan Ke and Wong Voon How were earlier asked to present themselves at the Brickfields police headquarters (IPD) for questioning over the Walk of Justice event.

“IPD Brickfields notified TBH-ADA that the appointment to give our statements at 5.30pm today has been cancelled.

“We are surprised and angry with this attitude of trivialising rule-of-law procedures and that we are not taken seriously.

“We will proceed to a lodge report against police violence at 5.30pm at IPD Brickfields and hold a press conference at 7pm,” the group said.

Yan Ke (above, left) had earlier told Malaysiakini that the questioning would be under the Peaceful Assembly Act.

On Monday, the police intercepted the final leg of the group’s march to hand over a memorandum to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim before they could reach the Parliament gates, causing a scuffle.

The brief altercation broke out when the police formed a human barrier to stop the group led by Beng Hock’s sister Teoh Lee Lan from entering the Parliament compound.

Lee Lan, who was already nursing an injured foot during the march, fell over amid the fracas.

She questioned why the police treated the group in such a violent manner for peacefully wanting to hand over a memorandum when they had done so without incident in the past.

Police report against violence

In a brief statement, Ng said Lee Lan, Voon How, and Liau Pin Chin will lodge a police report over alleged police violence today.

Yesterday, government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil said the police’s handling of the Walk for Justice event could be “improved”.

TBH-ADA had previously questioned several times why Anwar refuses to meet with Beng Hock’s family.

This morning, Anwar told reporters he will make arrangements next week to meet the Teoh family.

“Next week, after the (Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s) installation (this Saturday),” he said at an event in Kuala Lumpur when asked when he would meet them.

Beng Hock died under MACC custody on July 16, 2009.

The aide to then-DAP Seri Kembangan assemblyperson Ean Yong Hian Wah was found dead on the fifth-floor service corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after being questioned overnight on the 14th floor of the then-Selangor MACC headquarters.
