Raub MP submits 2 motions for urgent debate on Teoh Beng Hock issue

A government backbencher today submitted two written motions to Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul, seeking an urgent debate on matters related to the late Teoh Beng Hock.

Speaking to reporters in Parliament, Raub MP Chow Yu Hui said the motions submitted under Standing Order 18(2) represent matters of public interest which must be expedited.

Specifically, he cited a Home Ministry written response dated July 2 that stated investigations into Teoh’s death had been reopened but reclassified under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement.

“What the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock is asking for is that his murderer must be investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code (for murder),” said the DAP lawmaker.

Chow said he was also informed on July 2 that the Attorney-General’s Chambers had requested police to record more statements from key witnesses before submitting their investigation papers for further action.

In his notice to the speaker, Chow said the July 2 written response was the same as a previous response dated March 20 last year.

“In other words, there has been no progress in Teoh’s probe since the formation of the Madani government,” said Chow.

Chow’s second motion sought the speaker’s permission to urgently debate a request to allow civilians and civil society groups to enter Parliament and submit any memoranda of demands to the government.

‘Misplaced priorities’

This follows police action outside the Parliament gate against a group from the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement who yesterday concluded their justice walk in memory of Teoh’s death while under MACC custody on July 16, 2009.

“If this Parliament only allows MPs, ministers or VVIPs to enter the Dewan, and not allow the public, this is a matter of ‘misplaced priorities’ and a sign of arrogance,” said Chow.

He argued that the matter should be urgently debated to avoid loss of public trust in Parliament as a democratic institution.

This week is the last week for the Dewan Rakyat sitting before proceedings are adjourned until Oct 14.
