Bukit Aman may call up Beng Hock's family in probe over his death

Bukit Aman today said it might call in Teoh Beng Hock’s family members in the investigation into the DAP political aide’s death.

Criminal Investigation Department director Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said all new information will be evaluated in the reopening of the case.

“The possibility of calling them (Teoh’s family) back is very likely,” The Star quoted him saying at a press conference at Bukit Aman.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the police will reopen investigations into Teoh’s death.

He gave his personal guarantee that the investigation will be conducted fairly and transparently without any interference from any party.

Teoh died at the age of 30 on July 16, 2009. He was a political aide to then Seri Kembangan DAP assemblyperson Ean Yong Hian Wah.

He was found dead on the fifth-floor service corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after being questioned overnight on the 14th floor of the then-Selangor MACC headquarters.

In 2014, the Court of Appeal found that Teoh’s death was caused by one or several unknown persons including MACC officers.

Murder, not wrongful confinement

Teoh’s family has been lobbying for a murder investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code instead of “wrongful confinement” under Section 342.

In their legal filing, Teoh’s parents named three parties as respondents - the federal government, the inspector-general of police, and the head of the criminal investigations unit at police headquarters.

Additionally, they are requesting the court to make several official declarations including that law enforcement failed in their duty by not concluding the investigation within an acceptable timeframe.

Judge Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh set the date for the final decision on Oct 29.
