Putrajaya's beauty unparalleled in the world - Mahathir

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has heaped praises on Putrajaya - the beauty and growth of which is “unparalleled in the world.”

The nonagenarian took to social media to express awe at the rapid development of the country’s administrative centre.

“The streets are lined with flowers and beautifully trimmed hedges. Shady trees line the roads.

“Parks and gardens are well kept and landscaped. The administrators clearly have good taste and appreciate beauty.

“The buildings lining the central boulevard are imposing. Even the food courts are well designed and maintained,” Mahathir wrote.

Putrajaya was Mahathir’s brainchild when he served as the fourth prime minister. Originally known as Prang Besar, the area was developed to become the country’s administrative centre on Oct 12, 1994.

However, construction only began on April 16, 1995. Some RM20.5 billion later, the 4,931ha area took over Kuala Lumpur’s role as the administrative centre in 1999.

Putrajaya was declared a federal territory on Feb 1, 2001.

Elaborating, Mahathir said he has seen many cities around the world but none equals Putrajaya’s beauty and orderliness.

“May I say congratulations to the administrator of Putrajaya. You have done a great job.”
