Ronnie Liu has embarked on a mission - to stop the firebrand Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh from making racial statements.

Revealing this in a Facebook post, the former DAP assemblyperson said he has contacted Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to fix a meeting.

“I sent a WhatsApp message to Zahid yesterday seeking his help to arrange a meeting with Akmal over the flag-waving issue.

“The objective of the meeting is to discuss the importance of racial and religious harmony in our country and hope to convince and stop Akmal from making racial statements,” he added.

Liu (above) is also hoping to persuade the Umno Youth chief to cease making “unnecessary attacks” on the Chinese community and to avoid severing the amiable ties between Malaysia and China.

“It’s for the good of Akmal as an up-and-coming politician, his party and Malaysia as a whole,” he added.

Liu’s requests came following a controversy during a parade in Teluk Intan last week in which the organiser - Guan Gong Cultural Association - apologised for Chinese nationals waving their country flags at the event.

Akmal responded to the incident with outrage.

“Stop playing with the sensitivities in our country. Enough of this.

“We’re tired of apologies. We want concrete action and consequences for these acts,” he asserted,” he had said.

Liu is also an adviser to the Guan Gong Cultural Association.

Akmal’s antics

Akmal became both famous and infamous in different circles at the height of the KK Mart socks controversy when he called for a boycott of the retail stores.

Since then, the doctor-turned-politician has been at the forefront of issues related to race and religion.

He is also embroiled in a defamation case filed against him by DAP vice-chairperson Teresa Kok in relation to their spat over the halal certification issue.

During the Mahkota by-election in Johor last month, DAP was concerned that Akmal's antics would impact Chinese votes.

After BN successfully retained the state seat, the Umno Youth chief shared an article which painted him as a hero who managed to convince Malay voters to support the Umno Youth candidate because of his boldness in confronting DAP.
