The upcoming PKR election, expected to take place next year, will be Anwar Ibrahim’s final term as the party’s president.

PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh, as quoted by Utusan Online, said the party constitution permits each president to serve up to three terms.

This raises questions on whether the term following next year’s party polls will be Anwar’s final term as PKR president, a position he has held since 2018, and what this might mean for his role in the government.

“The party president can serve up to three terms and Anwar has only completed two terms so far. Previously, he did not hold the position (of president), it was Kak Wan (Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail).

“We can’t say that Anwar is unwilling to step down; look at how long other party presidents have held their positions,” she said.

However, Fuziah clarified that this does not mean Anwar cannot continue as prime minister even if he is no longer PKR president.

“That’s because Anwar has previously stated that one does not need to be party president to be prime minister.

“As long as we need him, there’s no issue with it.

“He can hold the mandate as the Pakatan Harapan chairman,” she added, as quoted by the news portal.

The positions of president and deputy president are up for contest in the party election next year.
