S'porean woman sentenced to jail after trying to bribe 'M'sian' auxiliary cop

A Singaporean woman was sentenced to three weeks in jail after pleading guilty to attempted bribery.

Wang Xiping committed the offence on July 17 after she was caught by an auxiliary police officer driving in the dedicated bus and lorry lane shortly after passing through Singapore immigration on the Johor Causeway.

According to Singaporean news reports, Wang was told she could not drive in the dedicated lane and was instructed to make a U-turn to the Woodlands Checkpoint and re-enter Malaysia.

However, she then offered the officer RM50 to let her continue driving.

When the officer - who was wearing a body camera - refused and asked for her passport, Wang then attempted to offer S$50.

She was later arrested.

Wang is reported as saying in court that her English is poor and that she had believed the auxiliary officer to be working for Malaysian authorities.

She reportedly thought the officer wanted more money, and offered the bribe again.

Wang pled guilty in court on Friday and was sentenced the same day.

However, the start of her jail sentence was postponed to today to allow her to settle matters relating to childcare as her husband was overseas for work and would not be returning to Singapore soon.
