Masidi voluntarily goes to MACC, clueless on 'reserve RM1m' request

Sabah Finance Minister Masidi Manjun voluntarily went to the MACC last night to give a statement.

This was after a whistleblower released a video showing a conversation with Masidi and his aide about an alleged RM300,000 bribe.

Masidi revealed that he went unprompted to the Kota Kinabalu MACC office at 8pm to give a statement about the clip.

“My visit to the MACC office is to help with the investigation and as a sign of my support to the MACC’s efforts to combat corruption in this state,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah secretary-general added that he would cooperate fully with the investigation.

What allegedly went down

Based on the video, the recording purportedly took place at the finance minister’s office on Jan 11.

During the conversation, Masidi agreed with the whistleblower that the latter’s application for a mineral exploration licence should be placed on the back burner because mining projects had become controversial.

They then appeared to acknowledge that RM300,000 had changed hands between them.

The whistleblower, who is a businessperson, had previously admitted to being the bribe giver.

In the same video, the businessperson met the minister’s aide, who confirmed that RM300,000 had been given.

The aide then asked the whistleblower to “reserve RM1 million” for Masidi to use in his constituency.

When contacted by Malaysiakini last night, Masidi claimed he was in the dark about the RM1 million request.

“I don’t know anything about that matter,” the Karanaan assemblyperson said.
