Summary:

  • Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari says he will remain in his post until the end of his term in 2028, citing advice from the state ruler to ensure stability and unity.

  • Rumours suggest Umno’s Tengku Zafrul Aziz may join PKR to potentially succeed Amirudin, but PKR’s secretary-general and Umno’s president denied knowledge of such plans.

  • Zafrul’s ministerial role ends in December 2025 as his senatorial term limit prevents reappointment.

Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari affirmed that he will remain in his post at least until the end of his term in office.

He said this in a statement today amid speculation about his post, following rumours that Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz is joining PKR.

“As His Majesty (Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah) has advised me - and consented to me sharing this advice publicly - I will remain in Selangor until the end of this term to ensure the stability of Selangor’s economy and the unity government,” he said.

Zafrul, who is in the Umno supreme council and is chief of the party’s Kota Raja division in Klang, is rumoured to be planning to join PKR.

However, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh told Malaysiakini in an interview yesterday that she has not received any application from the senator to join the party as of Nov 30.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also appeared to be in the dark about any plans by Zafrul to join PKR.

The website Suara TV carried a report yesterday claiming that the move to join PKR would pave the way for machinations that would see Zafrul replace Amirudin as menteri besar.

The report claimed that after Zafrul joins PKR, a by-election would be called for him to become a state assemblyperson - a prerequisite to lead the state administration. Amirudin would then purportedly take on a new role at the federal level.

Zafrul’s appointment as senator expires in December 2025 and he will also lose his ministerial position. He cannot be reappointed for another term as senator because he has already reached his term limit.

Meanwhile, the current Selangor government’s mandate lasts until 2028.
