T'ganu carries out first public caning against repeat khalwat offender
A repeat syariah offender in Terengganu became the first person to undergo his caning sentence in public at the Al-Muktafi Billah Shah Mosque hall, Kuala Terengganu, today.
Mohd Affendi Awang, 42, a widower, was sentenced to six strokes of the cane after his third khalwat (close proximity) conviction for being in seclusion with another person of the opposite gender.

Prisons Department officers carried out the sentence.
The syariah caning sentence made him the first offender in the state to be punished in public, witnessed by around 90 people including lawmakers and selected media who were allowed into the hall.
The father of five, who is serving a sentence in Marang Prison, arrived at the mosque compound at 2.29pm, accompanied by a prison warden and under close police surveillance.
He was wearing a red prison uniform and a face mask that hid all facial expressions and left at 3pm.
On Nov 20, Terengganu Syariah High Court judge Kamalruazmi Ismail imposed the sentence on Affendi after he pleaded guilty to committing khalwat.
Affendi was charged under Section 31 (a) of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Takzir) (Terengganu) Amendment Enactment 2022 for seclusion.
He was also fined RM4,000 and sentenced to six months in prison after failing to pay the fine.
The housebuilder was previously fined RM2,700 or three months in prison after pleading guilty on July 11, 2023, at the Kemaman District Syariah Lower Court.
He was also charged with committing the same offence for the second time on Jan 25 and the Terengganu Syariah High Court sentenced him to four strokes of the cane and a fine of RM3,000.
Initially, he was scheduled to be caned on Dec 6, but the execution of the sentence had been temporarily suspended following an application to review the decision.
