Politicians not barred from joining Saturday rally, but no party logos

The Sekretariat Rakyat Benci Rasuah will not prevent any political party from joining their protest this Saturday.

However, the secretariat’s spokesperson, A Tobey Qi-Sean, said there are conditions for political parties wishing to attend the gathering.

“We did not invite any political parties to join the gathering.

“However, we will not stop members of political parties from attending.

“However, we impose a condition that political parties attending are not allowed to wear clothing bearing their party’s logo,” he told Malaysiakini.

The Rakyat Benci Rasuah rally on Jan 25 is a follow-up to the New Year’s Eve gathering led by students in Sabah protesting against state politicians who are allegedly involved in corruption scandals.

The secretariat, representing 50 organisations and 38 individuals, is demanding immediate action on corruption cases involving politicians, transparent investigations, and a commitment from all political leaders, including those in the opposition, to end corruption in the country.

This comes after Malaysiakini revealed that several Sabah assemblypersons were allegedly discussing corruption to obtain mining exploration licenses, which also implicated Chief Minister Hajiji Noor.

Hajiji and others linked to the scandal have denied any wrongdoing, claiming it is a conspiracy to destabilise the state government ahead of the state election.

The rally this Saturday is also in response to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's call for youth not to defend corrupt leaders.

The organisers have been critical of both the government and the opposition.

Tobey also confirmed that, so far, no political party has contacted the secretariat to confirm attendance.

“As of now, no political party has contacted the secretariat.

“Parties like PSM and Muda have only signed statements of support.

“So far, there have been no discussions on mobilising members of these parties,” he said.
