Warisan women’s wing chief Norfaizah Chua believes that MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki has shared an invaluable, albeit comical, lesson for Sabahans who will be casting their ballots in the next state election.

She sarcastically remarked that Azam deserves a "best comedy" award, adding that the public will judge both his response and the federal government's handling of the Sabah corruption scandal.

“I sincerely believe that if Malaysia were to establish an award for the best comedy, Azam would surely win it based on his latest statement,” she said in a statement today.

She was referring to the chief commissioner stating that the videos related to the scandal are not usable for investigations or prosecution because they have been edited.

“Although I find his statement very amusing, I leave it to the public, especially the people of Sabah, to evaluate the performance of the chief commissioner and the role of the federal government in this investigation.

“I hope this case serves as a lesson to all levels of Sabah society in choosing their leaders in the upcoming Sabah state polls,” she added.

Laughing emojis say it all

Norfaizah pointed out that the public’s reaction to Azam’s statement is clearly reflected on social media, where an article on Malaysiakini’s BM Facebook alone received widespread ridicule.

“I urge Azam to wake up and take note of the 3,000 laughing emojis the public has ‘gifted’ him,” she added.

Yesterday, senior lawyer Shafee Abdullah urged Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor and the implicated assemblypersons to lodge a police report over the “edited” videos which his client had released.

Shafee is representing the whistleblower who claimed that the videos contained discussions of the alleged bribes given to the assemblypersons in exchange for mineral exploration licences.

“The state government shouldn’t waste this golden chance to clear its name,” he said.

Explain ‘edited’

Shafee also sought clarification from Azam for stating that the videos were edited, pointing out it is a broad term.

“Is MACC claiming these videos were manipulated? Or are they just referring to my client’s voice being altered for anonymity?” he asked.

“If they were truly doctored, why wait? The police should launch an investigation immediately. Arrest him. I guarantee he will hand over all the evidence he has,” the lawyer added.

Hajiji has dismissed the allegations as an attempt to tarnish his administration, suggesting that the whistleblower is collaborating with parties with vested interests.
