PAS puts Razman on garden leave, Perak Amanah Youth rejoices

Perak PAS chief Razman Zakaria has been put on garden leave from his party post.

According to Sinar Harian today, the decision was made by the central PAS leadership after Razman found himself in a bind over several issues, which include linking Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh with YTL Corporation founder Yeoh Tiong Lay.

The Malay daily added that PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad, who is Bagan Serai MP, will be serving as acting Perak PAS chief for the time being.

However, a Perak PAS source told the daily that there had been no official notification on the matter.

“No official letter was issued by PAS leadership on the matter,” the source added.

Wild allegations

In a speech that went viral on social media last year, Razman claimed that Hannah is the daughter of YTL Corporation’s founder.

On Jan 27, he apologised and admitted he was mistaken after the Segambut MP denied his claim.

It was not the first time Razman was forced to apologise after making wild allegations.

In December, Razman was forced to apologise to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming after falsely linking the latter to a procession in Teluk Intan, Perak - where delegates from China waved the Chinese national flag after the minister threatened legal action.

In 2023, he apologised to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in court as part of a settlement over his claim that Anwar said in a campaign speech that he would promote an LGBTQ+ agenda.

He was also ordered to pay damages to DAP national chairperson Lim Guan Eng in 2023 and former Perak menteri besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin in 2017 after being found liable for defamation.

‘A win for Perakians’

Meanwhile, Perak Amanah Youth chief Khairol Najib Hashim described the decision as a win for Perakians.

“This move is much needed by the people of this state who are getting tired of slander-based politics.

“For long, PAS claims to champion Islam but at the same time, it allows its leaders to keep on slandering without any remorse.

“The decision to put Razman on garden leave is a good start to restore the religion’s image, which had been tarnished by Razman’s actions,” he said in a statement today.

Khairol added: “With the advent of Ramadan, I hope Razman will take this opportunity to reflect on himself. Enough of tarnishing Islam’s image with actions that don’t reflect the values of the religion.”
