A Sabah-based NGO has called for an investigation into letters claiming to have written instructions by Warisan president Shafie Apdal supporting temporary identification document applications.

Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association Sabah (KDCA) youth chief Steve Johnny Mositun called for the National Registration Department (NRD) and Home Ministry to reveal the number of such applications Shafie had supported during his time as Sabah chief minister from 2018 to 2020.

He was quoted by Free Malaysia Today as asking whether these applications complied with the relevant laws.

“Sabah has been burned by this mistake before. We do not want to reignite old flames through backdoor (workings) of the state administration. The issue of citizenship is not a political ploy - it is about the nation’s sovereignty,” he said.

One of the letters was shared on Facebook by the Warisan young women’s wing in Penampang, which was addressed to Shafie, dated April 26, 2019, requesting his aid in expediting the applicant’s receipt of their temporary resident identity card (MyKas).

On the letter was a handwritten note requesting the NRD’s attention on the matter.

The Facebook post by Warisan said that MyKas is a temporary identification document issued by the NRD to those born in the country but have yet to obtain citizenship.

Meanwhile, Mositun criticised this statement, saying that it did not reflect reality.

“MyKas is essentially the starting point towards citizenship.

“Therefore, any external influence on the approval of MyKas, especially through political directives, is highly concerning,” he asserted.

He called on the MACC and the police to probe the issue for any abuse of power or administrative leaks.
