Pro-Hajiji NGO reports 'AI' audio alleging PM shielding reps in graft scandal

A total of 35 police reports regarding allegations of slander against Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor and the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government have been lodged, including on an audio recording.

Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia (G57), which is aligned with GRS, lodged five of them yesterday in Kota Kinabalu.

G57 chairperson Zulkarnain Mahdar said one of the reports concerned a recording purportedly resembling the chief minister’s voice, which has gone viral on social media.

He added that in the clip, the voice claimed that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had instructed MACC not to take action against the assemblypersons implicated in a mineral corruption scandal, as long as GRS cooperates with Pakatan Harapan in the upcoming 17th state election.

“I am confident that the voice is AI-generated. These days, AI can be used to create images, videos, and what more voice recordings.

“We can recognise Hajiji’s voice - this is not him. But it’s being spread by opposition party machinery, and villagers might believe it,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

Condo, vehicle purchases

Zulkarnain said the other police reports involved allegations against Hajiji, including claims of a condominium purchase worth RM8 million and the awarding of logging licences to cronies.

“There are also accusations against the GRS government concerning the purchase of eight four-wheel drive vehicles allegedly at prices exceeding market value, including licence plates labelled ‘SMJ’ that were claimed to be worth nearly RM4 million. These are also among the matters reported for the authorities to take action,” he added.

State polls factor

Zulkarnain said the 35 police reports have been made since February nationwide.

“G57 will continue lodging police reports until all slander spreaders are brought to court for action, and we plan to offer free legal services to the Sabah state government to file civil suits against those spreading slander,” he added.

He also did not dismiss the possibility that these allegations are closely tied to the state election.

“This has been ongoing from the start; it’s nothing new, but now I see they’re intensifying the slander.

“I believe this is Hajiji’s final term, and he certainly wants to leave a good legacy for Sabah. But they want to bring GRS down,” he added.
