Nurul Izzah vows to make 'best decision' on future in PKR

After receiving strong support from several state PKR divisions urging her to contest the deputy presidency, Nurul Izzah Anwar has pledged to make "the best decision" that balances unity with reform.

Nurul Izzah expressed appreciation for grassroots members’ trust in her, however, the former lawmaker said any decision needs to ensure that the party remains relevant and trusted by the people.

“Sincerely, I respect and value the grassroots view that I should contest for the PKR deputy president position.

"I shall make the best decision balancing between consensus, relationships and friendships, and meaningful change and reform for all members.

“We make these decisive statements not for any individual, but for the effort to build the future of PKR together through good times and bad. God willing," the PKR vice-president said in a statement today.

There have been growing calls from within PKR for the former Permatang Pauh MP to run for the deputy president post, which is held by Rafizi Ramli, who is the economy minister.

Yesterday, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim's senior aide and PKR vice-president Shamsul Iskandar Akin spearheaded calls of support from five out of six Malacca PKR divisions for Nurul Izzah to step forward and contest the party's deputy presidency.

Joining the chorus

A range of other leaders from PKR Women, as well as the party's divisions in Penang, Perak, Pahang, Johor, Kedah and Kelantan, have also declared their backing of Nurul Izzah, with many highlighting her capabilities and credibility.

Another PKR vice-president, Amirudin Shari, often seen as a third force within the party’s internal politics, also joined the chorus of figures backing Nurul Izzah.

Most recently, outgoing PKR Youth chief Adam Adli Abd Halim, who was unsuccessful in securing the Hang Tuah Jaya PKR division deputy chief post, voiced his support for her too, stating that she has consistently championed values aligned with the party's principles.

So far, only three party divisions in Selangor - Tanjung Karang, Pandan and Selayang - out of 22 have not endorsed a statement backing Nurul Izzah.

Nurul Izzah previously stated she intends to contest the PKR vice-presidency this time round, a post she was appointed to after abstaining from the 2022 party election.

Should she take up the mantle of deputy president, it would position her to succeed as PKR president. This is significant as Anwar's forthcoming term as party president - which he is set to win uncontested - will be his last after reaching the three-term limit.
