Sabah scandal: Govt tells Albert to name officers who warned him to zip lips

PARLIAMENT | Putrajaya has urged whistleblower Albert Tei to lodge a police report and name the MACC officers who purportedly warned him against exposing the Sabah mining scandal.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M Kulasegaran, in his winding-up speech at the Dewan Rakyat this evening, gave the government’s guarantee that strong action will be taken against those responsible if the allegation is proven true.

He said several MPs raised the issue and described the allegations as “very serious” and “totally unacceptable”.

“Any whistleblower who comes forward to expose wrongdoing must not be blocked or threatened by anyone, what more by the authorities themselves.

“I would like to advise Tei to lodge a report with the police and the MACC Complaints Committee immediately, and name the MACC officers involved as alleged.

“I give my full guarantee that the Madani government would never compromise on such threats, and we will take the strongest action if the allegation is proven to be true,” Kulasegaran said.

Earlier today, Tei's lawyer Mahajoth Singh revealed that the businessperson had approached MACC with information about the corruption scandal.

However, Tei was purportedly warned by MACC against coming forward before he exposed the Sabah mining scandal to Malaysiakini.

Since November last year, Tei has released a series of videos and documents allegedly implicating nine politicians, including the Sabah assembly speaker, whom he claimed accepted bribes in exchange for mining prospecting licences.

On July 30, Tei pleaded not guilty to corruption charges in Kota Kinabalu. Also claiming trial were assemblypersons Andi Suryady Bandy (Tanjung Batu) and Yusof Yacob (Sindumin), who were charged with receiving bribes.
