An attempt to silence me, Rafizi says after attack on son

PKR MP Rafizi Ramli described the attack on his 12-year-old son as an attempt to silence him from speaking out on certain issues.

However, the former PKR deputy president vowed not to bow to threats.

“After years of being a high-profile politician, this is the first time my family has been targeted.

“I believe this attack is a warning to me not to speak out on certain issues.

“Insya Allah, while I take steps to increase security, rest assured I will not bow to threats and continue with my work as usual,” he said in a statement today.

Earlier, it was reported that the Pandan lawmaker’s 12-year-old boy had been attacked using a syringe and is undergoing observation in a hospital.

Sepang district police chief Norhizam Bahaman, who was at the hospital where Rafizi’s son is being treated, confirmed the incident with Malaysiakini.

Elaborating, Rafizi said his son was attacked by an unidentified man at about 1.45pm when leaving a shopping centre in Putrajaya today, adding that he dragged the boy and gave him an injection.

“Upon checking (CCTV), two men on a motorcycle had tailed my wife’s car. In my opinion, they had planned this,” he stated, adding that the men were clad in black and covered their faces using full-face helmets.

Rafizi also mentioned that they had waited for the right moment to attack his son.

“I immediately took my son to UPM Hospital for treatment,” he said, adding that the police arrived soon after the incident.

“My family and I have provided statements to the police.

“Any further details about the incident, investigation, and medical results should be given by the police and UPM Hospital.”

‘Unprecedented’

Rafizi extended his appreciation to the police and the hospital staff for helping his family face the ordeal.

He also thanked well-wishers for reaching out to him on the matter.

Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul said he will request a briefing from Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail on the assault.

Johari told the Dewan Rakyat today that if he deems it necessary, he will request Saifuddin to explain the matter to the house.

“This is very unprecedented,” he said.
