IGP says statements recorded from 19 over attack on Rafizi's son

The police have recorded statements from 19 people, including family members, in the probe into a daylight attack on Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli’s son.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail confirmed this today, according to Bernama, stating that police had taken statements from Rafizi's family members, driver, employees and other witnesses to aid the investigation.

“Additionally, police have obtained and are reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the scene of the incident,” he reportedly said at a press conference at Bukit Aman today.

Khalid said that the police are still awaiting a chemical report from the hospital for details on the fluid that was injected into Rafizi’s son in the attack.

He added that the 12-year-old boy is currently in stable condition, with doctors continuing to closely monitor his health.

Khalid also said that police investigations found that the phone number from which threatening messages were sent to Rafizi's wife was registered under a foreign national, and police are still working to identify the individual.

On Wednesday, Rafizi disclosed that the whistleblower meeting he attended - just before his son was attacked on Aug 13 - was about Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s former aide Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak.

The former economy minister had hinted that the assault, in which his 12-year-old son was stabbed with a syringe at a Putrajaya mall car park, may have been a direct consequence of that meeting.

Farhash has denied any links to the attack, calling such allegations “crazy”.

Following the attack on his son, who now requires regular medical check-ups to determine the substance injected into him, Rafizi’s wife received a chilling text message that read: “Diam! Andai teruskan, AIDS!” (“Shut up! If you continue, AIDS!”), punctuated with three syringe emojis.

Not Ismail Sabri, not KJ

In a video post on X on Wednesday, Rafizi also rubbished attempts to link the attack to former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin, under the claim that he was investigating cases tied to them.

Rafizi slammed this as a “malicious attempt to divert attention”, while Ismail Sabri proceeded to lodge a police report after being linked to the attack.

In a statement, the Bera MP said his press secretary had lodged the report on his behalf at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

This is over a Facebook page that had published two allegedly false and defamatory articles linking him to the incident, and to a scandal concerning a private company.

Ismail Sabri also thanked Rafizi for the clarification.
