Rayer urges action in bullying case involving disabled student

A DAP lawmaker has urged authorities to take follow-up action in a 2024 alleged bullying case involving a student from a private educational institution in Hulu Selangor.

Jelutong MP RSN Rayer noted that the victim’s family lodged a report at the Kuala Kubu Bharu police station in December last year.

However, he claimed that the family is still awaiting justice for the boy, now aged 15.

“Until today, there has been no follow-up action by police against the suspects involved in the case,” Rayer told a press conference in Parliament today.

As such, he called on the investigating officer to act and also urged Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and the Selangor Criminal Investigation Department to look into the matter.

According to Rayer, the victim, who is a person with disability cardholder, ended up in the hospital last year after he was subjected to attacks and bullying by other students from the same learning institution.

Rayer also claimed that the medical report on the teenager’s injuries found that he had endured sexual assaults.

Malaysiakini is withholding the name of the academic institution allegedly involved in the case pending official comment.

Many severe cases

Bullying cases in educational institutions have often gained widespread public attention and prompted repeated calls from parents, NGOs and lawmakers for stronger preventive measures and accountability mechanisms.

Most recently, the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir sparked a nationwide uproar, with the public pressing authorities for swift action and reforms to ensure student safety.

Zara was found unconscious in a drain below her school dormitory in Papar, Sabah, on July 16 and died the following day at Queen Elizabeth Hospital I in Kota Kinabalu.

Her family believes bullying may have played a role in her death. An inquest into her death is set to begin on Sept 3.
