Anti-Israel rally marches in KL rain, leaders want Trump invitation revoked

Heavy rain in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon did not deter hundreds from joining an anti-Israel rally organised by the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (Mapim).
The protest began after Friday prayers outside the Tabung Haji building, where several speakers addressed the crowd before they marched together to the United States embassy.
Chants of “Free Palestine”, “hancur Israel” (destroy Israel), and “jahanam Amerika” (damn America) echoed along the route as protesters braved the rain.
The rally drew civil society leaders and politicians from across the spectrum, including PKR central leadership council member Maszlee Malik, PKR Youth chief Kamil Abdul Munim, PAS Youth deputy chief Hafez Sabri, Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir, PAS’ Pendang MP Awang Hashim, as well as leaders from Amanah and DAP.
Mapim president Azmi Abdul Hamid initially attempted to deliver a protest memorandum to the US embassy.

However, as in previous demonstrations, it was placed in the embassy’s post box after no representative came forward to receive it.
‘Rescind Trump invitation’
Later, Kamil told the crowd that the embassy had contacted him and agreed to accept the memorandum, after which he went in together with Maszlee and Hafez.
Speaking during the rally, Mukhriz urged the government to cancel the invitation extended to US President Donald Trump to attend the Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur later this month.
“People like Trump cannot be our friends. Surely, we cannot befriend an obvious enemy.
“This is the time for Malaysians to rise and protest Trump’s presence,” he said to cheers from the crowd.
The two-hour demonstration ended peacefully around 4.15pm under police supervision, though a small group of protesters remained outside the US embassy.
