PN MP presses Anwar for apology on 'fuel subsidies for foreigners' claim

PARLIAMENT | An opposition lawmaker chided Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for refusing to apologise over his claim that Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin had backed fuel subsidies for foreigners.

Addressing the Dewan Rakyat today, Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu) issued a stern rebuke to Anwar (Harapan-Tambun) and the MCMC, accusing the latter of failing to carry out its duties effectively.

“Until today, Pagoh (Muhyiddin) and I are waiting for (Anwar’s) apology over his statement that (Muhyiddin) had encouraged the distribution of fuel subsidies to foreigners, when in fact, that never happened.

“I want to ask the MCMC: how far has its investigation gone? It’s been two months and there’s still no answer - this shows how incompetent MCMC is,” said the Bersatu lawmaker in his debate over Budget 2026.

Rosol (above) asserted that if the commission has already concluded its probe, he will await an apology from Anwar “as an example of good governance for the entire society”.

“As the saying goes, ‘the fish rots from the head’,” he added.

On Aug 5, Muhyiddin denied allegations that he defended petrol subsidies for foreigners, as claimed by Anwar in the Dewan Rakyat.

Anwar had then ordered the MCMC to launch a probe into the matter. As of Sept 9, the commission has yet to complete its investigation to determine whether Muhyiddin had made the remarks alleged by the prime minister.

While it claimed to be waiting for feedback from TikTok to complete its probe, MCMC said it has submitted its findings thus far to the deputy public prosecutor for review and further instructions.

‘Fake news’

Checks by Malaysiakini previously did not find any record of such remarks by the Pagoh MP. However, there was one TikTok video which alleged such remarks were made.

And the way the information was presented is similar to how fake headlines are shared on social media.

Following backlash over his claim, Anwar said he is willing to apologise to Muhyiddin once the MCMC determines whether the source of information cited by the prime minister was false.

While he acknowledged that one of his sources has been verified to be inaccurate, Anwar stressed that he also wants Muhyiddin to apologise for allegedly making slanderous remarks against the government.
