MCMC still probing if Anwar right or wrong about Muhyiddin over subsidies claim

The MCMC has not yet completed a probe to determine whether Perikatan Nasional chief Muhyiddin Yassin had made remarks defending RON95 subsidies for foreigners - as alleged by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Muhyiddin denied making such remarks, but Anwar said he would not apologise until the probe is complete.

In a statement today, the MCMC said the investigation is still ongoing, but that it had done early checks on content spread on social media.

However, the commission is waiting for further feedback from TikTok to complete its probe.

In the meantime, the MCMC said it has submitted its findings thus far to the deputy public prosecutor for review and further instructions.

Muhyiddin’s ‘defence’

Last month, Anwar claimed in Parliament that Muhyiddin had defended giving fuel subsidies to foreigners, saying that they, too, contribute to the country.

He even chided an opposition MP for not being aware of the PN chief’s statement.

Muhyiddin denied this, and Anwar subsequently ordered the MCMC to launch a probe.

A statement by the MCMC last month indicated that it was investigating a dubious TikTok video, which claimed Muhyiddin had made the remarks as claimed by Anwar.

Checks by Malaysiakini found that the way the information was presented in the video is similar to how fake headlines are shared on social media.

Anwar acknowledged in Parliament that one source of information he cited was false, but claimed that there are two other sources that he wanted the MCMC to verify.

He said he would only apologise if the MCMC found there was no legitimate source.

However, he also wants Muhyiddin to apologise over various attacks against the government.
