Teen in fatal school stabbing to face murder charge tomorrow

A 14-year-old suspect in the fatal Bandar Utama school stabbing incident will be charged with murder at the Petaling Jaya Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) said its thorough examination of the investigation papers submitted by the police earlier found “sufficient basis” to press charges against the boy.

“Accordingly, the AGC has decided to charge the student under Section 302 of the Penal Code with the offence of murder,” it added in a statement today.

The teenager was previously remanded from Oct 15, with police today securing a remand extension set to end on Oct 28.

The 16-year-old victim, Yap Shing Xuen, was fatally stabbed at the girls’ toilet at her school in Bandar Utama, Selangor, on Oct 14.

Police have said violent video games and certain social media content may have played a role in the stabbing, with Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar saying probes are being conducted into online platforms that might have shaped the suspect’s behaviour and mindset before the killing.

In a press conference two days after the incident, Yap’s mother, Wong Lee Ping, claimed that her daughter was stabbed 200 times from the upper right side of her body, down to her leg area.

At the same press conference, Yap’s stepfather, How Boon Chin, pleaded for social media users to refrain from spreading falsehoods about his stepdaughter as the family is focused on finding answers.
