Did the police act in good faith when they stopped the human rights march yesterday?

Lawyer Latheefa Koya ( far right ) asks the crowd to move forward and continue the march towards the Bar Council premises behind Central Market.

However their path is blocked by the same police personnel who

stopped their march earlier.

Latheefa: “Are you arresting me?” Police officer initially says “No”, but answers “Yes” after being asked again.

The rest of the group continues march to Bar Council without interruption from the police, except the loud whirring of their helicopter.

But the Bar Council premises looks like it is under siege.

The police cordon widens to the carpark beside the premises (where stalls

have been set up for the festival).

Lawyers Edmond Bon ( second right ) and Rajen Devaraj ( far left ) negotiate with the senior police officer to remove his men from the Bar’s rented space in the carpark, and to move the police car out of there.

The police officer agrees. The police personnel leave the rented carpark. This is followed by the police car.

Rajen announces that the Bar’s Human Rights Festival is about to begin and asks the people to move into the auditorium.

The Human Rights Festival proceeds as scheduled and ends before lunch. However at 12.45pm, lawyer Edmond is arrested for trying to prevent DBKL from taking down posters and banners in front of Bar Council’s premises.
