Najib can be PM for one more year under proposed term-limit law

GP2025: This two-term limit law, like all Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s laws, was not thought through enough for the good of the people. This bill should be rejected outright for several reasons:

1. A law must be introduced first to make it illegal for public officials to take commissions and markup their claims. If necessary, a limit must be placed on commissions with the requirement that commissions go into the nation’s coffers. This will deter public officials from taking money from the government.

2. With the above law, there must be another law clearly stating that public officials facing corruption charges should resign from their positions.

3. With these two laws, public officials have no excuse not to resign from their positions if they are charged in court for any offence.

4. These two laws will make it impossible for any MP facing court charges to become prime minister. This will deter corruption at the top.

This will ensure our prime ministers and public officials are clean. The excuse “no choice” since so many leaders are facing court cases will no longer hold.

5. Lastly, in the current context, it is very unlikely that any prime minister will last even one term. He or she will be thrown out in the second term until a prime minister emerges who wins the support of the majority for a second term.

For that to happen, the current contenders must be put into cold storage. The best way to do it is not to have a two-term limit now. It will only be making way for candidates facing court charges and carrying too much baggage to remain in politics. That is unhealthy for Malaysia.

Dm: Perhaps they should include in the proposed constitutional amendment, a maximum of two general election terms (regardless of the length of each term, whichever is shorter).

This would prevent abuse of the Act, calling for a snap election to become prime minister again in the next term, just because he did not complete the 10-year term.

This also creates uncertainty with a change of prime minister in the middle of the governing period.

VoteOfOne: This article only looks through a regressive lens. It prompts that Malaysia has no potential future, short of suggesting the only solution the country has is to replace whatever disappointments with the current leaders, to settle with cowards who quit due to threatened vote banks and an out-of-touch convict for scamming the country.

By the way, what responsible citizen would want a leader only for one year and change? It is no different to useless employees who shamelessly use up their annual leave by adding sick-leave quota.

Pink: The likelihood of Najib Abdul Razak becoming a prime minister again is very slim with or without the term limit law.

Not easy for him to kick Deputy Prime Minister and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi out. He is now in full control of rejuvenated Umno. So, this article is nothing more than fear-mongering to incite ridicule and odium towards Najib.

He has suffered enough, weakened physically and emotionally and could not match the aura of Anwar, one of the most popular prime ministers in our living memory. Give him space and let him rebuild his life peacefully with his family.

GanMu: Indeed. Najib has gone through a lot, and taking on the premiership, which will be for one year only, is probably the last thing on his mind.

I would like to believe that all he wants is to get over with all the legal suits, hopefully, get home to spend his next phase of life with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is 72 years old; by the time his legal suits end and when he gets out of prison, he may be over 75 at the least. I guess he will leave it to the younger generation to take the lead.

WinningScarecrow: Many Malaysians still miss Najib as the most secular prime minister Malaysia ever had. But we need someone new from Umno who is young and a great champion of race and religion to lead the country.

Dr Akmal Saleh is the best candidate from Umno who can carry on with Najib’s legacy. Let’s give 10 years to Akmal and let Najib go home to spend time with his family.

Malaysians will remember and appreciate Najib’s contribution forever.

Koel: Is Malaysia so lacking in talent that we have to look at tainted men for leadership? Or do we just lack common sense and integrity in making our choices?

Malaysians should take a deep breath and look at the disastrous outcomes around us that happen when people choose the wrong leaders.

When a country's court of law has ruled that a person is a felon or a rapist, it also means that the person is unfit for any job until he has been rehabilitated, shown remorse and made reparations for his wrongdoing.

Anything short of that means we just have a wrongdoer waiting for the next opportunity to break the law and brutalise the nation.

It is time to clean up our highest offices of privileged felons who have made the art of the steal appear virtuous. Do we care enough or have the courage enough to do this?
