Prison Department

• The Prison Department said it views Suhakam's public inquiry findings into last year’s riot at Taiping Prison, which claimed one inmate's life, seriously.

  In a statement, the department said it would fully cooperate with the relevant authorities in reviewing the report comprehensively and with integrity, while reaffirming its commitment to security, welfare, rehabilitation and human rights compliance in line with prison regulations and legal provisions.

  The department also urged the public to avoid speculation or premature conclusions that could interfere with ongoing investigations and follow-up action by the authorities.

  In damning findings, the commission’s inquiry panel concluded that the violence was not simply the result of inmate unrest but had in fact been instigated by prison management and staff themselves.

  The report also sparked growing calls for those responsible to be held accountable.

Animal welfare

• Concerned civilians have lodged several police reports regarding the death of a stray dog in Ulu Tiram, Johor, after a pest control truck ran over and killed it.

  

  Execute AWA, an animal welfare and humanitarian movement, shared the police reports with Malaysiakini and called for justice for the stray dog that cruelly lost its life in a housing area.

  Last week, Free Malaysia Today reported that the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) said it would take action against workers employed by its contractor, following the incident.

  The report quoted Jafni Shukor, chairperson of the state housing and local government committee, saying that an internal MBJB investigation identified the individuals involved as workers of a contractor appointed to manage stray dogs.

  Jafni said that the contractor was issued a show-cause letter for allegedly breaching standard operating procedures and the terms of appointment. He added that MBJB has also lodged a police report on the incident.
