A challenge from the Tun?

vox populi big thumbnail ‘I view the remark as a challenge by Tun to all Malaysians to prove him wrong . Malaysians should response to this challenge by getting the government to appoint a royal commission.’

On Dr M: Ask the tribunal to apologise

Batman: ‘Ask the tribunal to apologise,’ says Tun Dr Mahathir. Not satisfied with this, Tun went further to challenge Malaysians to proof that he was corrupt.

I view the remark as a challenge by Tun to all Malaysians to prove him wrong . Malaysians should response to this challenge by getting the government to appoint a royal commission to address this issue once and for all.

The government must demonstrate once and for all that no one, NO ONE, is above the law. Not even an ex-premier. If Anwar can be jailed six years for allegedly asking the police to frighten ( gempak ) a witness, I wonder how Tun will fare when the government opens the case on him.

Joe Fernandez: Mahathir now says the tribunal should apologise for getting the judges sacked. Next, he will say that the King must apologise since it was he who approved the Tribunal.

Wasn't Mahathir the one who engineered the whole scam because he was afraid the court will rule against him in a pending case which would have seen him being booted out from the premiership?

On Make party-hopping illegal

Juara: We are now talking about anti-hopping laws which was actually in place not too long ago.

In 1991, the law was that if a MP or Adun were to jump party or resign or pass away, the constituency shall have a by-election and a new MP or Adun will be elected.

But in 1992 when Umno's entry into Sabah was done, there was a big problem after the election because Umno was short of a few seats in the state. The chief minister then Pairin Kitingan who was parked outside the palace for five days and the then TYT was said to be sick and therefore could carry out the swearing-in ceremony. Helicopters were seen landing and taking off from the palace grounds.

Later in the parliament the anti-hopping law was amended to be a ‘hopping law’. Now when that was done, the hunt was begun to look for Aduns and MPs that can be ‘bought over’ or brainwashed to join the Umno. Finally, Pairin was sworn in as a chief minister but just within a week, in tears, he announced his resignation.

The first of the Aduns to ‘charge his springs’ and jump camp was Lajim Haji Ukim followed by a few more Aduns therefore giving power to Umno to form the state government in Sabah. Umno knew that even if there was any by-election, they stood very slim chances of wining and resorted to amending the anti-hopping law to a hopping-law.

That time, the BN needed the ‘hopping law’ to protect themselves and now when they on the opposite side, they are talking about anti-hopping laws. Why in the first place didn't they think about this? They need to protect themselves because they cannot trust their own comrades. What a shame and now history is about to repeat itself.

On T'ganu MB: Abdullah backs down?

Donald: The PM and Umno people will never want to know how to learn from past blunders. They still haven't realised that their utter arrogance and hypocrisy were the major factors which contributed to their 2008 GE debacle. The way the PM and his 22 MPs tried to get their own way with regard to appointment of the Terengganu MB is one classic example. The words employed by the PM in trying to show that he had the power were grossly inappropriate.

Come on Mr PM, please wake from your illusion. Don't ever underestimate the cerebral power of the Malaysian public. A very simple case? You had said in no uncertain terms that the appointment of Ahmad Said was unconstitutional. But now you support it (forget the reasons why). We can appraise you in many ways for this very decision you made, eg we see that you are a promoter of unconstitutional deeds. You are still in power now. Take the opportunity for soul- searching and redemption lest you find sooner or later a disgraceful exit.

On Will Muhd Muhd Taib declare Aussie properties?

Curious: Could anyone explain the rational to include Muhammad Muhammad Taib in the current cabinet? I am bewildered that such a tainted character be included in a line up that is supposed to tell the rakyat that reforms are on the way. It is bad enough that he did not explain where he got those millions he took into Australia from and why it was on his person when he was caught. He even acquitted himself by saying that he did not understand the language on the declaration form. Mind you, he may not have been ‘accidentally’ caught on his very first try.

It is no surprise that on the first chance he got air-time, he tried to put down the opposition elected by the people. Then he went soliciting support to defer the Umno AGM to allow time to prop up confidence in Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Isn't this reminiscent of the tasks that he did in the Dr Mahathir Mohamad era ? Aren't there individuals in Umno that are somewhat 'cleaner' that can do the job he has been given? Or is it too tall an order?

On Deputy minister Ghapur quits

Joe Fernandez: Nothing anti-Abdullah must be read into Ghapur Salleh's resignation from the cabinet. I was very surprised when Ghapur was listed as a deputy minister. This man has resigned before out of the blue as deputy chief minister of Sabah on the grounds that his performance was not good. But nobody had accused him of poor performance. At that time, many people were being picked up under the ISA for being involved in issuing bogus ICs to illegals and padding the electoral rolls with their names, especially for marginal seats.

In his letter toAbdullah, Ghapur cited his family and business commitments. At a press conference, he also said he would have resigned even as a full minister, squashing rumours that he was sulking over not being appointed as a full minister. I believe him. Ghapur may want to be chief minister. In that case, any posting to KL will not help him on the local scene. Alternatively, we have to give the man the benefit of the doubt.

On Political climb of the 'Ong' brothers

The Observer: Stanley Koh has hit the nail on the head. The party does not belong to the two brothers. There is no such thing as ‘on the job training for MCA president’. Enough is enough. There is no room for this kind of sub-standard leadership to represent the Chinese. His calibre is not high enough. Throw the two brothers out before it is too late.

On: MB: 'Zero squatters' policy to continue

William Lim: RM9 per head levied on foreign workers (in Selangor) is nothing. It is affordable. In Singapore, the levy ranges from S$150 to $450 per month. The Selangor government needs to have a steady revenue source also.

On Yuran RM10: Suaram bantah S'gor

RM10 sebulan, bukannya RM10 sehari. Apakah fungsi Suaram sebenarnya? Apakah matlamat mereka?

On Showdown in Tibet

Outsider: It is disgusting to read the Western media painting a righteous picture on the violent riots in Tibet. Almost all the media used the language like ‘a riot triggered by long time suppression’. Is this not obviously a misleading statement to start with? Then there is the claim of no religious freedom, I'm not a Tibetan so I hold neutral stand. But get real, the western countries can hardly care about either suppression or religious freedom in Tibet - not unless Tibet has oil.

Perhaps it's because of the politics? What is not happier than bringing damage to the country that is going to surpass you as the world leader. It won't even surprise me if the Western governments are involved in funding and coordinating the riots, just like in Afghanistan in the past. Poor Dalai Lama becomes the scapegoat.

The news suppression by the Chinese government hasn't help either. The world doesn't know what is really going on. Keeping others in the dark has made it look like there is something to hide.

Baiyuensheng: The writer wrote: ‘This contradicted Tibetan reports of dozens of deaths, perhaps as many as 100, and accounts of foreign tourists who said they heard shots and saw the bodies of Tibetans gunned down by the security forces'. I would advise the writer to get his facts first-hand instead of reading about someone assertions and writing about it. Because what he wrote has had an impact on readers.
