The Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) has agreed to make public misconducts and irregularities that occur in harbours to ensure there is no ambiguity in port management.

Civil Movement against Corruption (Gerak) president Nazree Mohd Yunus said: "We have asked the ACA to announce the results of the investigation and they have promised to do so, especially cases that involve the welfare of the people."

Nazree was speaking to reporters at the ACA headquarters in Putrajaya today where he had gone to submit a 23-page document containing information on corruption and wrongful use of power in the various ports in the country.

"We are here today because we suspect wrongdoings have taken place in the extension of port management contracts," he said.

"Ports are the main gateways into the country. What with the alarming number of illegal immigrants being smuggled into Malaysia, it is important to employ transparent and legitimate procedures in electing the people who run these ports," he added.

'Healthy development'

According to Nazree, since the ACA was given the power to prosecute by the Attorney-General's chambers, the ACA has been "tirelessly working" to solve cases involving corruption in port management.

Nazree pointed out that the move warranted transparency and clarity in the workings of ACA.

"For Gerak this is good news. It is a healthy development but we have to wait and see the implementation of the prosecution powers given to the ACA. We also have to observe the action that will be taken.

"Nevertheless, this move increases the transparency of the ACA and we look forward to more proactive steps to solve the current issues," he said, adding: "I also hope the ACA will be braver now in revealing irregularities and wrongdoings."
