PAS’ candidate in the Kuala Terengganu by-election , Abdul Wahid Endut’s campaign took a festive twist yesterday when he presented the Chinese community in Kampung Cina with calligraphy bearing a Chinese New Year message.

"During Chinese New Year, many will receive ang pow . Some will receive money and some will receive gifts. But remember, the best ang pow you can get are these two words. This is the ang pow we should all fight for," he said.

Abdul Wahid claimed that it was his first ever attempt at Chinese calligraphy and by most accounts, his efforts were decent despite the fact that he was aided by pencil marks on the paper.

According to the organiser of the event, Abdul Wahid was initially asked to write traditional Chinese New Year greetings but he had chosen his own message to complement his campaign.

Several members of the community expressed disappointment that Abdul Wahid had walked by without acknowledging them.

Minutes later, he rushed off in his black SUV to nearby Kuala Ibai after learning that a party member’s mother had passed away. Abdul Wahid offered a prayer for the deceased and tried to console relatives.

It is learnt that the party member had recently returned to Kuala Terengganu in order to cast her vote on Saturday.
