Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming announced that he will sit out of the 15th general election.
DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said he respected Ong's decision and thanked him for his contributions.
There is also speculation that Damansara MP Tony Pua may also make a similar decision.
Both leaders did not win a position in DAP's central executive committee election in March.
Ong, 47, said while the party election was a consideration, it was not the main factor and he wanted to let a younger generation lead.

Clock ticking on anti-hopping law
The government and Pakatan Harapan are in a race against time to complete a revised draft of the anti-hopping law as their memorandum of understanding (MOU) will expire at the end of July.
Tuaran MP Wilfred Madius Tangau, who is a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee tasked with fine-tuning the legislation, said there are two meetings left - on May 12 and 23.
Groups that have been consulted include the electoral reform group Bersih.
Among the areas they have been consulted on included whether independent MPs should be restricted from changing parties and if MPs contesting under a borrowed banner must join that party.
DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said Harapan may consider extending the MOU if the government holds up its end of the bargain to pass the anti-hopping legislation.

Helicopter 'Datuk' charged
The pilot who landed a helicopter at Padang Ipoh to pick up nasi ganja from a nearby restaurant was charged with deviating from the flight plan.
It was previously reported that the owner of the helicopter was KL-Kuala Selangor Expressway (Latar) managing director Mohamed Raffe K Chekku.
It is now revealed that the 53-year-old "Datuk" was personally flying the helicopter. He faces up to RM50,000 fine or up to three years imprisonment or both.
