UUCA: Will Adam Adli challenge boss?
Student protesters are expected to march to Parliament today (Monday) amid renewed calls to abolish the University and University Colleges Act (UUCA).
This is after Higher Education Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said there was no need to abolish the Act.
Pakatan Harapan had previously made the abolition of the UUCA part of its GE15 manifesto.
In 2023, then deputy youth and sports minister Adam Adli Abd Halim had planned a meeting with then higher education minister Khaled Nordin to express his and Harapan Youth’s stance against the Act.
While what transpired during the meeting is unclear, it did not change the government’s position on the UUCA.
Instead, the government introduced amendments in 2024 that gave universities the power to limit a student’s tenure on student councils.
The amendments were passed despite Harapan and opposition MPs expressing concerns that the government was further restricting students’ freedom.
The renewed calls for the abolition of UUCA, however, present a fresh opportunity for Adam, who is now the deputy higher education minister.
The question is, will the former student activist turned politician seize the opportunity and make a stand?

Modi-factor lands Zamri in lockup
Preacher Zamri Vinoth - long viewed as above the law - was arrested on Saturday night, together with activist Tamim Dahri Abdul Razak.
The duo were nabbed just before a planned protest against illegally built houses of worship commenced in downtown Kuala Lumpur. They are being investigated for sedition and have been remanded until Monday.
Earlier, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim vowed to crack down on protests that threatened national security during his Indian counterpart Narenda Modi’s visit - sparking criticism from lawyer Latheefa Koya.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus confirmed that police had taken into consideration Modi’s visit when carrying out the arrests last night, saying there was a need to preserve public order.
