Last year's Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections witnessed Pakatan Harapan and PAS taking on BN. It was a bitter reminder for the opposition of how three-cornered fights split votes.

Taking cognisance of this, some in PKR have lobbied for negotiations to continue with PAS despite the severance of formal ties between the two parties.

Another group within PKR which is opposed to prolonging the talks argued that deputy president Azmin Ali had tried in vain until the eleventh hour to convince PAS on direct fights in the by-elections.

According to them, this affected Harapan's election preparations and the group feared that a similar scenario would repeat if a full-stop is not put to this.

The opposing views had been simmering for more than a year. But it boiled over last week when PKR lawmaker William Leong resigned from the party's political bureau in protest over the continued talks.

The issue also caused discord within Kelantan PKR, with grassroots leaders mutinying against the state leaders deemed to be too friendly with PAS.

Following these developments, PKR vice president Rafizi Ramli called the matter to be put to a vote through a special congress but Youth deputy chief Afif Bahardin dismissed the proposal.

While those in PKR lock horns over the matter, Malaysiakini is seeking our readers' stand on whether PKR should continue engaging PAS.
