CHINESE Xinjiang and Malaysia share a common background - the two countries are enriched by a mixture of cultures and traditions from a multi-racial and multi-ethnic community that is dominated by Muslims.

Mystical Steppes: Along the Silk Road , performed by the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar Theatre Dance Troupe over three days in Kuala Lumpur last week, allowed Malaysians to have a glimpse of the colourful way of life and traditions of these ethnic groups.

The troupe, established in 2002, is led by its co-founder and show director Airken Kutubiding. It has presented more than 1,500 shows around the world since.

Their performances showcase the diverse cultures of the Uyghur, Kazakh, Mongolian, Tajik, Uzbek and Tartar peoples living in the vast region bordering Asia Minor.

Highlights of the troupe's shows at the KLCC Convention Centre were the Big Hat Dance (Uyghur dance), Zamila (Uzbek dance) and Welcoming the bride (Tajik dance).

The show in itself has been described as a feast for the senses, with high energy scenes of the traditional grape harvesting festivals and fascinating wedding celebrations.

Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister who graced the event said the performance was a perfect opportunity for Malaysians who have yet to visit their homeland (Xinjiang) to experience the rich cultures and traditions of the Chinese province.

"As they watch the show, the performance can help them to understand the life of their ancestors during that time in Xinjiang," he said in a souvenir programme.

Trading centres

Rais also said the troupe's visit to Malaysia could act as a platform for Malaysia to strengthen ties with China in more ways than just the economy.

He noted that apart from the similarities in the cultural perspectives of Xinjiang and Malaysia, the two were also well known trading centres historically.

"Malaysia was known as a popular trading centre for the East-West sea route, while Xinjiang was also the trading hub for the legendary land route between Asia and Europe," Rais added.

The cultural performance was held in conjunction with Malaysia's 50th Anniversary of Independence and Visit Malaysia Year 2007.

The show was presented by the Star and OSIM, and supported by Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage.

Proceeds from the event were donated to charity. Among the recipients are the Raja Muda Selangor Foundation, Alzheimer's Disease Foundation and Hospis Malaysia.
