I am deeply disturbed by repeated comparisons being drawn between the First Lady Endon Mahmood and Anwar Ibrahim in their preference to seek medical treatment abroad.

Let us be clear - the First Lady, just like any other citizen of Malaysia, is fully entitled to her choice. Anwar Ibrahim, in contrast, is a convicted criminal. Plain and simple, his rights are and should be limited as those afforded to any other convict in prison.

If today, Anwar's wife Wan Azizah (Heaven forbid) suffers from an ailment and is prevented from going abroad for her chosen treatment, then it would be fair to make such parallels with the First Lady.

In the case of Anwar Ibrahim, whatever one views are about him, please accept the fact that his options and rights are no better and no worse than those available to our numerous other prisoners who have been convicted of a crime.

Whatever choices Anwar makes in this regard (i.e. to choose local treatment or to deny himself the treatment he needs), I would like to join his family, friends and other Malaysians in praying for his health and well being.
